What we have here is probably what was known as a "Hypantesis," which was a victory parade in honour of rulers as they made their way in triumphant procession into their home town after winning a glorious victory.  Astonishing about the hypantesis described in the Gospel (Luke 19:29-40) is the person in whose honour the victory parade was being held: not the emperor, not the king, not the procurator, but the most unlikely person, with no special honour and no muilitary escort. Yet the masses of people, moving out of the city to greet him, placed amazing hopes in him and greeted this festal pilgrim openly as the King of Israel.

"Notes on the throw away society" is the theme of this Sunday's sermon in Warrnambool, based on Philippians 3:7,8 (taken from the second reading for the day).  We are pretty good at deciding what is to be kept and what is to be thrown away when it comes to everyday items.  We are not, for example, going to take the sausages purchased at the supermarket and thrown them in the bin and place the wrapping in which the sausages came on the barbecue! If you are having a spring clean, however, it can sometimes be a bit trickier, because opinions vary as to which items should be kept and which ones thrown away.  Things become even more complicated when you think about life's values and philosophies and beliefs. How do you decide what is of value in these areas and what can confidently be discarded? The Apostle Paul gives some good advice.

Midweek Lenten Service

To be held in Warrnambool on Wednesday the 13th March, our midweek lenten service will this week continue the series, "Only Jesus" and will be based on the theme "Only Jesus could challenge us to move mountains" (Matthew 21:18-22).  The service will this week be led by Pastor Bill Fry of the Hamilton Parish.

READINGS:  II Corinthians 5:16-21
                        Luke 15:11-32

Sermon Text, Luke 15:11-32

As they read this parable, many are inclined to dwell exclusively on the relationship between human beings.  If we take this parable only as a lesson in how human beings are to behave toward each other, we are then missing entirely, one hundred percent, absolutely and completely, the real point of the whole thing.  Why is it so often so hard for people to get it right, that this parable is about the father and the son (or, perhaps better, about the father and the two sons)?  It is about our relationship – yours and mine - with God.  Is it even thinkable that our broken relationship with God could be healed when, in a corresponding situation among human beings, you would never be able to even dream about the possibility of reconciliation? These are some of the matters we shall be taking up for consideration during this Sunday's sermon.
