Sermon Text, Luke 15:11-32
As they read
this parable, many are inclined to dwell exclusively on the relationship between human beings. If we take this parable only as a lesson in how human beings are to behave toward each
other, we are then missing entirely, one hundred percent, absolutely and
completely, the real point of the
whole thing. Why is it so often so hard
for people to get it right, that this parable is about the father and the son (or, perhaps better, about the father and the two sons)? It is about our relationship – yours and mine - with God. Is it even thinkable
that our broken relationship with God could be healed when, in a corresponding
situation among human beings, you would never be able to even dream about the
possibility of reconciliation? These are some of the matters we shall be taking up for consideration during this Sunday's sermon.
