What we have here is probably what was known as a "Hypantesis," which was a victory parade in honour of rulers as they made their way in triumphant procession into their home town after winning a glorious victory. Astonishing about the hypantesis described in the Gospel (Luke 19:29-40) is the person in whose honour the victory parade was being held: not the emperor, not the king, not the procurator, but the most unlikely person, with no special honour and no muilitary escort. Yet the masses of people, moving out of the city to greet him, placed amazing hopes in him and greeted this festal pilgrim openly as the King of Israel.
